Health and Safety Policy for Gardeners Bedford Park
This Health and Safety policy sets out the standards and procedures followed by Gardeners Bedford Park to protect the wellbeing of our employees, subcontractors, clients, visitors and members of the public. Our work involves gardening and grounds care in a variety of outdoor environments, and we are committed to managing risk responsibly and continuously improving our safety performance.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Gardeners Bedford Park aims to provide and maintain safe and healthy working conditions, equipment and systems of work for all people involved in or affected by our activities. We seek to prevent accidents and work-related ill health by identifying hazards, assessing risks and implementing effective control measures suited to gardening and landscaping tasks.
We are committed to complying with applicable health and safety legislation and recognised industry good practice, and to reviewing this policy periodically so that it remains relevant to the services we provide.
Management Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the management of Gardeners Bedford Park. Management will ensure that:
Suitable risk assessments are carried out for gardening tasks such as hedge cutting, lawn care, planting, pruning and waste handling, as well as for the use of powered tools, machinery and vehicles.
Safe systems of work are developed, communicated and implemented, including clear instructions for working with sharp tools, power equipment, chemicals and heavy materials.
Employees and subcontractors receive appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision so they can perform their duties safely and competently.
Equipment, tools and machinery used in gardens and outdoor areas are properly selected, maintained and inspected at appropriate intervals.
Accidents, near misses and incidents are reported, recorded, investigated and used to improve our procedures and controls.
Employee and Subcontractor Responsibilities
Every gardener, operative and subcontractor working for Gardeners Bedford Park has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. All personnel are expected to:
Follow all safety instructions, site rules, risk assessments and method statements issued by the company.
Use equipment, machinery and tools only for their intended purpose and in line with training and manufacturer guidance.
Wear the personal protective equipment provided, such as gloves, safety footwear, eye protection, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing and respiratory protection where required.
Report any hazards, defective equipment, unsafe conditions or practices, and all accidents or near misses to management as soon as possible.
Avoid working under the influence of alcohol, drugs or any substance that may impair judgement or physical ability while carrying out gardening duties.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
Before commencing work at a garden or outdoor site, relevant hazards will be identified and risk assessments undertaken. These may include, but are not limited to, the risks associated with:
Use of powered equipment such as lawnmowers, strimmers, hedge trimmers, blowers and chainsaws.
Manual handling of soil, plants, paving, bags of materials, waste and equipment.
Work at height, including on ladders or when accessing trees, hedges or raised beds.
Use, storage and handling of gardening chemicals and substances such as pesticides, herbicides and fertilisers.
Exposure to weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, ice and strong sunlight.
Contact with uneven ground, trip hazards, ponds, water features and garden structures.
Traffic movement and vehicle use in driveways, access routes and public areas.
Where risks cannot be eliminated, suitable control measures will be implemented. These may include alternative methods of work, the use of mechanical aids, additional protective equipment, barriers, signage and safe working distances.
Equipment, Tools and Personal Protective Equipment
All equipment and tools used by Gardeners Bedford Park will be maintained in a safe condition and inspected regularly. Defective equipment will be taken out of service immediately and repaired or replaced as necessary.
Personal protective equipment will be provided where risks cannot be adequately controlled by other means. Employees and subcontractors must use and look after this equipment, report any defects and store it correctly when not in use.
Training, Competence and Supervision
Gardeners Bedford Park ensures that all personnel are competent to carry out their tasks safely. This may include formal training courses, in-house instruction, on-the-job coaching and periodic refresher training. Specific training will be provided for activities such as operating power tools and machinery, applying chemicals and working at height.
Supervision will be provided where necessary, particularly for new employees, young or inexperienced workers and for higher-risk activities. No one will be required to perform tasks for which they have not been adequately trained or assessed as competent.
Chemical and Environmental Safety
Where gardening requires the use of chemicals such as pesticides or herbicides, these substances will be selected, stored, transported and used in accordance with safety data and relevant regulations. Only trained and authorised personnel may apply such products, and all reasonable measures will be taken to prevent harm to people, pets, wildlife and the wider environment.
Waste generated from gardening activities will be handled and disposed of responsibly. Care will be taken to keep work areas tidy, minimise the risk of slips and trips, and leave gardens and outdoor spaces safe and secure on completion of work.
Communication and Consultation
Gardeners Bedford Park encourages open communication about health and safety matters. Employees and subcontractors are invited to raise any concerns, suggestions or observations that may help improve safety. Information about hazards, controls and safe working methods will be shared clearly and in a timely manner.
Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement
This Health and Safety policy will be monitored on an ongoing basis and formally reviewed at regular intervals, or sooner if there are changes in legislation, industry standards, company activities or if significant incidents occur. Lessons learned from inspections, audits, incident investigations and employee feedback will be used to improve our systems and practices.
By following this policy, Gardeners Bedford Park seeks to maintain a safe and healthy environment for everyone involved in, or affected by, our gardening and outdoor maintenance services.
